Alpine Lakes Region from Black Lake

These day hikes start at Black Lake (黑海). Elevations range between 4,100 and 4,460 meters. Please read the explanation of hiking times, distances, altitudes and rating levels.

1. Black Lake Shoreline
Region: Alpine Lakes Region
Altitude in meters: 4,100
Rating: Easy
Summary: A brisk walk around Black Lake takes 45 minutes. A more leisurely pace allows contemplation of the glorious surroundings.


2. Pass 4230
Region: Alpine Lakes Region
Itinerary: Black Lake—Pass 4230
Duration: 1 hour round-trip
Altitude in Meters: Start 4,100. Destination 4,230
Elevation gain: 130 meters
Rating: Easy
Summary: Enjoy an outstanding vista of lake and peak, one of the best in the entire region. The pass is located ½ kilometer northwest of Black Lake. The Lanhua Meadow Route crosses over the pass.


3. Alpine Lakes Circuit
Region: Alpine Lakes Region
Itinerary: Varies
Duration: 1 to 5 hours round-trip depending on itinerary
Altitude in Meters: Start 4,100. Destination 4,090 to 4,260
Elevation gain: 10 to 330 meters
Rating: Easy to Moderate
Summary: Starting from Black Lake, hike to one or several of the nearby alpine lakes. A circuit including all seven takes 5 hours.


4. Col 4460
Region: Alpine Lakes Region
Itinerary: Black Lake—Col 4460
Duration: 4 hours round-trip
Altitude in Meters: Start 4,100. Destination 4,460
Elevation gain: 360 meters
Rating: Moderate
Summary: Col 4460, situated 1 kilometer southwest of Black Lake, provides superb views on clear days. You may glimpse the white massif of Meili Snow Mountain (梅里雪山), the highest peak in Yunnan Province. See here for the route to the col.
