Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (玉龙雪山)
Location: 24 km south of Haba Snow Mountain, 23 km north of Lijiang City
Summit Elevation: 5,596 meters
Summary: The snow mountains of Haba and Jade Dragon are twin brothers` according to local legend, with Tiger Leaping Gorge, one of the deepest in the world, separating the two. Jade Dragon is the higher summit at 5,596 meters, while Haba sits 200 meters lower. The mountain is actually a small range with a dozen peaks surpassing 5,000 meters.
Only one ascent of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain has been recorded. Following the 1987 climb, authorities closed the peak to further mountaineering attempts, out of respect for local ethnic and religious sensibilities. Given the beauty and prominence of the peak, other ascents may well have taken place without fanfare.
The mountain is readily visible from the streets of Lijiang City (丽江市). The classic view from Black Dragon Pool (黑龙潭)—lake, arched bridge, and glacial peak backdrop—is one of the most photographed scenes in China.
Tourism is heavily promoted in the area, and three cable cars transport visitors up the eastern slopes. The highest one reaches 4,500 meters. A boardwalk, often grossly overcrowded, extends 200 meters higher, affording closeup views of a deeply crevassed and plunging glacier.
Trekking in certain areas is allowed, apart from seasonal closures. Hiking information is limited, however, you can find some here. English-speaking trekking guides can be hired through Lijiang Ecotourism Company (丽江新拓生态旅游公司), phone 139-8882-6672, website www.ecotourism.com.cn.
