Shika Snow Mountain (石卡雪山)
Location: 75 km northwest of Haba Snow Mountain; 10 km west of Shangri-La City
Summit Elevation: 4,449 meters
Summary: Several trails afford hiking opportunities on Shika Snow Mountain, just west of the city of Shangri-La (香格里拉). A cable car, reputed to be the longest in Yunnan Province, reaches nearly to the summit and is a popular tourist attraction. For an unusual itinerary, you might plan a hike in combination with the cable car. Be sure to spend several days in advance acclimatizing to altitude, easy to do as Shangri-La sits at an elevation of 3,300 meters. A valley south of the summit hides Lingxi Lake (灵犀湖), elevation 4,070 meters. The lake can be visited on a day hike or as the destination of an overnight backpack. A wooden boardwalk, apparently seldom used, connects the lake with the summit zone. The ascent from the lake to the upper station of the cable care (4,400 meters) takes 1½ hours. Faraway ranges, holy in Tibetan Buddhism, poke above the horizon: Meili Shan, highest in Yunnan, and the triple summits of Yading in Sichuan. They are visible to the northwest and north. The snow mountains of Tianbao, Haba, and Jade Dragon appear to the south. A trekking guide to Shika Snow Mountain is in the works. For guide service please consult the Guides page.
